The Power of Inner Solitude: The Example of Hazrat Umar Farooq (RA)
He said, "Solitude, which means seclusion, brings comfort and peace from the company of the wicked in two ways: one by withdrawing from people, and the other by cutting off ties with them, which means turning away from creation." The way to withdraw from creation is that the servant turns his face away from them and sits in seclusion, and outwardly expresses disgust with the company of companions, and finds comfort in seeing the defects of his actions,
and protects himself from meeting and mingling with people, and protects them from his evils. But the way to cut off ties with creation is that the heart is such that it does not have any apparent connection with them. When a person's heart is detached from creation, there is no fear or anxiety that the thoughts of any creature can overpower his heart. At that time, even though this person is among creation,
he is in reality separate. And his intentions are unique from theirs. This is a very high and safe rank, and this is the straight path. And Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) attained this rank. He was outwardly established in government and caliphate among creation. But his heart found comfort in seclusion and solitude.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said about Hazrat Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him): "Satan runs away from Umar's shadow."
